FAQ

Questions, answered.

The things homeowners, architects, and builders ask before our first conversation. If yours isn't here, write us.

How is an ALT3 project scoped?+

Every home is custom-engineered. We scope in tiers — Foundation (lighting control, shades, network), Signature (whole-home audio, security, and unified control), and Estate (reference cinema, invisible audio, landscape, and concierge service) — and walk you through what each level delivers so you can decide where to invest and where to hold back.

When in my project should ALT3 get involved?+

As early as possible — ideally during architectural design and before drywall. Most of what makes a great smart home invisible happens in the rough-in: back-boxes, conduit, speaker pockets, keypad locations, and network pathways. We work directly with your architect, designer, and builder.

Do you work with our architect and builder, or replace them?+

We work with them. ALT3 is the low-voltage and control discipline on your project team — comparable to your lighting designer or AV consultant. We coordinate with everyone else and document everything for the field.

What's the difference between Lutron HomeWorks QSX and RadioRA 3?+

HomeWorks QSX is Lutron's flagship wired system for new construction or major remodels — unlimited scale, engraved Palladiom or Alisse keypads, and integration with every other system. RadioRA 3 is a wireless system designed for existing homes or smaller projects. We're certified in both and will recommend the right platform for your home.

Do you serve outside Charlotte?+

Yes. We serve Charlotte, Lake Norman, Myers Park, SouthPark, Waxhaw, and luxury residential markets across the Carolinas. For projects in Asheville or coastal NC/SC, we travel.

What happens after the system is installed?+

Installation is the start, not the end. ALT3 offers proactive monitoring, software updates, and scene refinement — most homes evolve over the first 12 months as families settle in. You'll have a direct line to our team.

Can you retrofit a home I already own?+

Often, yes — especially if there's an attic, basement, or accessible crawlspace. Wireless platforms like Lutron RadioRA 3, Caséta, and Josh.ai cover a lot of ground without opening walls. We start with a walkthrough to map what's possible.

Is Josh.ai really private compared to Alexa or Google?+

Yes — that's the design intent. Josh processes locally on a Josh Core in your home rather than streaming everything to the cloud, and it doesn't sell or share data. It's the only voice platform we recommend for primary residences.
